What happened

  • On October 22, with its third-quarter results, Barclays said it will cut about 5,000 jobs, about 5% of its roughly 93,000 staff. About 1,000 went in the first half of the year; some 4,000 more go by the end of 2026.
  • About 60% of the cuts fall on support functions, including software developers. The bank’s own presentation ties them to “technology change efficiency driven by AI”.
  • Finance director Anna Cross said the cuts come as “AI makes our people more productive”. Barclays did not name the tools it uses. It says it is cutting its cost base to make room for new investment.

Why it matters for you

Until now, AI job cuts were mostly a tech-company story (Amazon, Microsoft). A large bank that names AI as the reason for cutting developers is new: the people who build software are among the first the software replaces. This is the productivity story in one line: the same work with fewer people, and the savings go to investors and to more technology. For business and finance students, the safer skills are the ones that direct and check the tools: judgment, risk, clients, and knowing what the numbers mean.
