The chatbot-companion pioneer seeks a sale after lawsuits over harm to teenagers. Disney offers $20 million.
What happened
- On October 12, Character Technologies, which runs the Character.AI chatbot platform, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware. It plans a court-supervised sale.
- A Disney affiliate set the floor price with a $20 million offer; others can bid more. The company lists assets and debts of $50–100 million and will keep the app running during the sale.
- The company blamed legal, regulatory and operational pressure. Families had sued, saying the chatbots harmed their teenage children.
Why it matters for you
AI companion apps carry real legal risk, and a platform you use can change owners or close. Export anything you want to keep. For investors, it is a reminder that fast user growth is not the same as a lasting business.
