An AI model writes 722 math papers

Science
OpenAI posted hundreds of math results from an unreleased model. Mathematicians are curious, and careful.
What happened
- In early October, OpenAI posted 722 math papers on GitHub, written by an internal model that is not released. It says the model tried about 4,000 open problems, mostly from a single request to a single AI agent.
- Many results come with a formal proof that a computer can check step by step; not all of them.
- A day later, OpenAI withdrew three papers after a sign error broke an argument they shared.
Why it matters for you
If machines can write proofs by the hundred, the scarce skill becomes checking them and choosing good questions. The same holds for reports and code: when output gets cheap, quality control gets valuable.
