Google buys nuclear power for AI

A 20-year deal pays for upgrades at 11 nuclear plants. AI’s hunger for electricity is now a business story.
What happened
- Google and Constellation announced power deals worth about 3.6 gigawatts in total. Only 890 megawatts is new: Google pays, over 20 years, for upgrades (uprates) that make 11 existing nuclear plants produce more. Constellation puts the work at more than $4.3 billion; the first upgrade should be done by 2028.
- The rest, about 2.7 gigawatts, is a 15-year contract for power from plants that already run.
Why it matters for you
AI runs on electricity. When a big buyer locks up existing power, prices can rise for everyone else on the grid. Watch power costs and data-center rules where you live; they shape where AI gets built and what it costs.
