A dispute over how AI may be used in war ends with the US military dropping Anthropic, at least on paper.
What happened
- On October 5, a Defense Department official told the BBC that the department “has ceased the use of Anthropic products.”
- The dispute began in February, when the department labelled Anthropic a supply-chain risk. Anthropic had refused to let Claude power fully autonomous weapons or mass surveillance.
- People familiar with the matter told the BBC that Claude was still in use the week before, built into Palantir’s Maven system. Anthropic declined to comment.
Why it matters for you
A model maker’s usage rules can cost it its biggest customer. For any organization, the story also shows switching costs: work built around one model takes months to move to another. Keep your prompts and workflows portable.
