Faculty unions bargain over AI
Campus
At Pitt and Pennsylvania’s state universities, unions want human teaching, human grading and limits on AI layoffs.
What happened
- Faculty, staff and graduate unions at the University of Pittsburgh, and the faculty union of Pennsylvania’s state universities, are bargaining for AI protections.
- Their asks include: courses designed and taught by humans, human evaluation of staff, no layoffs caused by AI, limits on surveillance, and rights over teaching materials.
- No contract is signed yet. Pitt’s latest offer dropped the “taught by humans” clause.
Why it matters for you
AI rules on campus are moving from syllabus statements to labor contracts. Expect clauses on who may grade, who owns course materials, and how AI tools may monitor work.
