GPT-6 Astra and the “AGI era” debate
Models
OpenAI’s new top model set records, and its president said it was not unreasonable to call this the AGI era.
What happened
- On September 3, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra. President Greg Brockman said it was “not unreasonable” to think we are in the era of AGI (artificial general intelligence: AI as capable as people at most mental work).
- Critics, including benchmark makers, said the record scores depend on heavy prompt tuning, not general ability.
- It was the first OpenAI model to cross its own “critical” level for cybersecurity skill, which led to extra testing.
Why it matters for you
“AGI” has no agreed test, so treat the word as marketing. Judge a model by your own tasks and by independent leaderboards like those on the model watch.
