EU rules on AI labels take effect
Rules and risks
Policy
From August 2, chatbots in the EU must say they are AI, and AI-made content must be marked.
What happened
- On August 2, 2026, the transparency rules of the EU AI Act began to apply. People must be told when they talk to an AI system, and AI-generated content must be labelled.
- The stricter rules for “high-risk” uses (such as hiring or credit) were pushed back to late 2027 under a simplification package.
Why it matters for you
If your work reaches people in Europe, label AI-made text, images and video, and tell users when they talk to a bot. Many global firms now apply the same labels everywhere.
