UChicago gives every student Claude
Campus
The University of Chicago offers free Claude access to all students, faculty and staff, without a campus-wide AI rule.
What happened
- President Paul Alivisatos announced free enterprise access to Anthropic’s Claude: faculty and staff from July 2026, students before the 2026–27 year.
- There is no university-wide classroom AI policy. Each instructor sets the rules for a course, and may ban AI.
- Two faculty committees will study AI in academic life and in teaching. Staff get AI training.
Why it matters for you
More universities now buy one AI tool for everyone, the way they buy e-mail. The open questions are the same everywhere: usage limits, privacy of chats, and how long the deal lasts.
