Anthropic and OpenAI file to go public

The two leading AI labs submitted draft IPO papers a week apart. The public may soon own a piece of frontier AI.
What happened
- On June 1, Anthropic confidentially submitted a draft S-1 (the filing a company makes before selling shares to the public) to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
- On June 8, OpenAI said it had done the same. Neither has set a date.
- A public listing would require both to publish audited accounts: revenue, costs and risks.
Why it matters for you
For the first time, ordinary investors may be able to buy shares in frontier AI labs. Their filings will also show, for the first time, how much it really costs to build and run these models.
