Jury rejects Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI
Companies
A jury found Elon Musk sued too late. The ruling cleared a path for OpenAI’s plans to go public.
What happened
- On May 18, a jury in Oakland took less than two hours to find that Musk had waited too long to sue (the statute of limitations had run out). The judge adopted the verdict and dismissed his claims.
- Musk had said OpenAI’s leaders misled him into giving $38 million and then attached a for-profit business to the nonprofit. His lawyers plan to appeal.
Why it matters for you
OpenAI’s structure as a for-profit company is now legally safer, which matters for its customers and for a future share sale.
