OpenAI launched GPT-5.5; within a day, DeepSeek answered with V4, free to download under an MIT license.
What happened
- In late April, OpenAI released GPT-5.5 in ChatGPT and Codex; developer access came later, after extra safeguards.
- On April 24, China’s DeepSeek released V4-Pro and V4-Flash as open-weight models (anyone may download and run them) under the MIT license, both able to read about a million tokens at once.
Why it matters for you
Open models keep close to the frontier at far lower prices. For private data or tight budgets, an open model you run yourself is a real option.
