What happened

In early December, OpenAI’s leaders reportedly called a “code red” over Gemini’s fast gains.
On December 11, OpenAI released GPT-5.2 in three versions: Instant (fast), Thinking (reasons step by step) and Pro (most capable).

Why it matters for you

Competition among the big labs is now measured in weeks. For users that means better models and lower prices, but also frequent changes: re-test your important prompts after each update.
